Vibe is a magazine that is similar to my music magazines genre. I used this image of an issue of vibe’s front cover to show the conventions that I used on my magazine that are typical things that should be on every magazine cover.
When creating my music magazine I looked at other magazine’s to get idea’s because I wanted my magazine to look appropriate and professional like most huge magazine’s out there so I used a lot of conventions that exist on a lot of magazine’s firstly the main image that takes up the whole of the front cover as you can see from the vibe magazine above and my front cover both the artist’s on the cover stand out and have writing all around them. The main image is even more important then the title which is why vibe placed Janet Jackson above the title which is good if you’re a real known magazine but with mine I wanted people/my target audience to be able to clearly see the title of my magazine to understand what type of magazine it is and even to make them want to buy it. Sell lines are used to get people to buy your magazine to look at it and want to read it because of what you have to offer inside so I also used my questionnaire results to think about what my target audience would want to read about and what would interest them into buying my magazine.
2.) How does your music magazine represent particular social groups? Before creating my music magazine I thought about the type of people who would be interested in my magazine and what type of social groups they would belong to. My music magazine is aimed at all ethnic backgrounds because my magazine is standing up for the love of music no matter what group you belong to and I think If I aimed it at just one ethnic group it wouldn’t represent that and it would show that only a certain ethnic group could be interested in the music genre my magazine is. I used neutral colours because my magazine is aimed at both male and female teenagers. I used a young male adult to be on the cover of my magazine and artist’s featured inside who are mainly young which will attract youngsters that are interested in RnB, grime and Rap which will mainly mean they follow an urban street culture. My magazine is mainly aimed at progressive youths who love music and possible even be interested in becoming the next big thing which is why I used a new artist who has struggled his whole life to be where he is but never gave up and is why the article on him is mainly about his struggle, to give faith to troubled youngsters. I used a boy who’s from east London and has struggled with being a white rapper to prove about how people are stereotyped wrongly and that it shouldn’t matter where you’re from what colour you are or how you look when it comes to your interest in music.
3.) Who would be the audience for your music magazine? The audience for my music magazine is young teenagers from the age of 14-17, who are interested in hip-hop/rap/grime the reason the magazine is really for younger teenagers is because it’s a teen magazine and the people on the front cover and inside my magazine will mainly be similar to their age group and from similar backgrounds to influence teenagers to do good with their life’s and not waste talent they have and my magazine is about image and what message im giving out to my target audience and because a lot of music genre’s like hip-hop, heavy metal etc. are blamed for how children act and we want to prove that music’s a good thing, that’s what some troubled teenagers might do is more to do with their life or even past not there interest’s in music. That’s why I decided on my magazine title lyrical teens for teenagers who have a dream and don’t really get the support they need with lyrical teenz you get the message that no matter what has happened to you even if you cant see yourself becoming whatever you want to you can achieve whatever you want as long as you try hard enough and my target audience are stereotyped as troubled teenz, waste of space, no good, rude, impolite, take drugs, drink, have underage sex and aint really bothered about their education when really there are a lot of teenagers that have amazing talents that some don’t even about and this magazine will make them see its good to be independent and different and that they don’t have to be like their friends they can choose their own way and make a better life for themselves.
4.) How did you attract/address your target audience?I attracted my target audience firstly through the title Lyrical teenz, this will stand out to teenagers who like music who may even be lyrical themselves secondly my main image is of a teenager boy who is a new artist, who has been raised just like most of the teenagers buying this magazine. He has a hard time getting where he is and who wants to tell kids no matter how bad your life might be or might get you can always change it its never to late and to never give up on yourself even when most people have. I chose him because he does look like an artist and he could be a good role model also he blends in with a lot of teenagers from the streets of London so a teenager boy or girl would walk into a shop see him on the front cover and want to read his article which will inspire them into wanting a better life for themselves. I decided not to dress him up wearing loads of jewellery or wearing any hat or a huge jacket because I wanted him dressed simple to represent that he is just like every other kid living in the worse parts of London who has a passion for music and will stop at nothing to make it big like a lot of children living in the run down parts of London wish to do also its his first interview since being signed so I wanted to show that its not just about being famous because I didn’t want to give that impression out like as soon as your famous your better then everyone else or think you are he blends in and that makes him look more like a nice down to earth guy. Other things I did on my music magazine cover to attract my target audience were large text to stand out and catch their eye also I added 3 images of young teenagers symbolizing that the magazine is for both boys and girls. Also I used a catchy puff ball advertising a trip of a lifetime for two and going to a concert this will defiantly attract my audience because they probably have never had a chance like that or might not ever get an opportunity like that.
5.) What kind of media institution might distribute your music magazine and why?The media institution that would distribute my music magazine would be Bauer publishing and the reason why is because they own more than eighty influential media brands spanning a wide range of interests, including heat, GRAZIA, Closer, MCN, FHM, Parker's, MATCH, Magic 105.4, Kiss 100, Kerrang!, all-new Q Radio and the Big City Network. This would be great for advertising my music magazine because kiss 100 plays a lot of different music that include the music genre’s that I have used for my music magazine and this would attract a lot more people to buy my magazine, my audience do know kiss 100 and most say its their favorite radio station which would attract them to my magazine and would mean they would be very interested about my magazine. Kiss 100’s target audience is from the ages of 15-34 which would mean all the teenagers that might listen to kiss could also be interested in my magazine because of their age group. The key thing that defines kiss 100 listeners is their love of music which is basically what my magazines about the love of rap, grime, and RnB. The audience is broken down across 4 typologies - Progressive Youth, Conscious Consumers, Modern Mainstreamers and Family Guys. Like ive said my magazine is for youths who may not have a good life but are aiming for one and by buying and reading my magazine will be inspired by the people/artists featured in my magazine.
6.) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing your music magazine? Constructing my music magazine has helped me a lot to use technology by using programs like Photoshop and illustrator which I had a few problems with before creating my magazine because I didn’t realise the amount of different things you can do on them and I think this helped a lot when it came to making my music magazine because due to playing around with images and practising I learnt more skills which then went into my front cover, contents page and double page spread. From creating my fist magazine (preliminary task) to creating my music magazine I can see a lot of changes and I think its because a lot of things from getting use to Photoshop and illustrator but also I planned more on my real music magazine I changed my mind a lot on my real music magazine like the main image I took loads of different pictures and then chose the ones I thought suited my magazine best and I change the main image about 3 times. I also made a questionnaire to ask people basically their interest’s in music what type of magazine’s they like what music do they listen to just to get feedback so I can use more things my target audience would be interested in also I had a Blog that I would update and put all my work on and then make polls asking whether or not they fault my front cover was good enough or suitable for my target audience and if my front cover matched with my contents page and double page spread and a lot of people who voted said they liked my magazine and thought the main image title and text was really good.
This is a print screen of a poll that i put on my blog to get feedback on what people think about my music magazine.
7.) What do you feel you have learnt in the progression from creating the school magazine (preliminary task), to creating your music magazine?
From making my school magazine (preliminary task) to creating my own music magazine I learnt a lot about the main codes and conventions of a magazine that improved my music magazine and gave me a lot of idea’s for my front cover. The preliminary task helped me to make a music magazine best to my ability just by planning and thinking seriously about every little detail that I put on my magazine because I learnt that even the smallest thing represents something in someway and because I didn’t plan what to do for my school magazine which I think is why I could of improved my school magazine a lot better and why I took my music magazine a lot more serious because looking at the front cover of my preliminary task to the front cover of my magazine I can see a lot of things I could have changed and maybe would of if I had planned it.
As you can see on my music magazine and my school magazine they do have similar essential things on them like title, main image, bar code, date, price and text showing what’s inside the magazine. But my music magazine looks as if it could be a real magazine whereas my school magazine could be improved a lot and so I thought of a lot of idea’s and put them all together changed a few things added more detail and tried to improve as much as I could to make my music magazine look professional.
On all magazines the main thing is the main image my school magazine (Dreamz) doesn’t show that it doesn’t go well with the magazine and looking at the image it doesn’t tell you what the magazine’s about it doesn’t represent what most main images do to attract their target audience and so again it made me think more about what I wanted my image to be on my music magazine. By doing this and overall improving everything I done from my preliminary task to my music magazine front cover you can see a major improvement which is based on what I learnt from making the school magazine to my music magazine.
